Before he began shooting his first big movie, the 1995 version of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, Emma Thompson’s now-husband Greg Wise received a psychic prediction from a friend that he’d meet his future wife on the film’s set. While that prophecy was shown to be very much true, it didn’t quite go down the way Wise expected. At the time, Thompson, who played with Elinor Dashwood, was married to actor Kenneth Branagh, and so Wise had his sights set on another famed costar: Kate Winslet.

“Everyone else about the film set was married,” Wise — that recently played Lord Louis Mountbatten in Netflix’s The Crown — shown in a 2014 meeting with UK paper The Express. “So I thought,’ It has to become Winslet.’ We went to the Glastonbury festival together. But it was the wrong call.”

The same year which Sense and Sensibility hit theaters, Thompson and Branagh divorced — and it was really Winslet who helped make a love relationship for the currently married couple. To this day, they remain close friends with all the Titanic celebrity.

“She pointed out that we were correct for each other and told me that Emma’s marriage was finished,” he added. “It was meant to be, just as my friend Helen had predicted.”

Their coupling ultimately helped Thompson heal at what she is described as a time of great pain. The conclusion of her marriage to Branagh came under rumors that her husband had begun an affair with Helena Bonham Carter about the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In fact, Thompson has said the heartbreak inspired one iconic scene by her 2003 film, Love Truly in which her character discovers her onscreen husband’s infidelity.

“I had my heart very poorly broken by Ken,” Thompson — who’s currently starring alongside Mindy Kaling in Amazon’s late Night — stated in 2018, each the Telegraph. “So I knew what it was like to find the necklace that was not meant for me. It was not just that, but we have all been through it.”

In a different Telegraph interview, she elaborated: “I have had so much bloody clinic at crying in a sack. Then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer”

What followed, of course, were considerably happier times. After almost eight decades of relationship, Wise and Thompson were married in 2003 at a ceremony in Dunoon, Scotland. Their daughter Gaia, who had been born in 1999, also acted as the flower girl at the ceremony, a Hello! magazine.

The same season, Thompson and Wise embraced a son called Tindyebwa Agaba (or even Tindy, for short), a former child soldier from Rwanda who was 16 years old at the moment. As stated by the Daily Mail, Tindy’s father had died from AIDS when he was nine and his mother and sister were recorded as missing during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. With the support of a humanitarian charity, the boy was able to flee into the UK where he eventually met Thompson and Wise.

As far as the couple’s longevity — having now been together more than two decades — Thompson has talked about having some non-traditional views on relationships. Per E! News, she stated the following in a 2013 interview:

"Monogamy is an odd condition, and actually it's an odd state for ladies. I think that we're locked into specific ideas and certain intimate ideals that have shaped our thinking about relationships for a while. And that I do sometimes wonder about if there are alternatives, and about if our fury and anger and disbelief and horror about infidelity is quite realistic."

Wise later addressed his spouse’s remarks in a 2014 Daily Mail interview — clarifying that he has”not been” monogamous.

Even so, the pair may have profited from what Thompson has called marriage sabbaticals. As Wise elaborated, “Celebrities have sabbaticals all the time because you are away working. There are always going to be periods of time when you are having a very different life to another.”

No matter what their trick maybe, Thompson and Wise certainly appear to have discovered the secret to a happy marriage. And all began with a psychic vision — and a bit of help from Winslet.
